I came up with this New Orleans style tofu on the morning of the 4th of July. I was hungry and raided my fridge for anything that would make sense. A few months back I received some spice mix samples from Chef Wheeler of Seasonality Spices.

It was NOLA Red (New Orleans, USA) – Handcrafted Spice Blend and I’ve been wanting to put it to use. Since I’ve been playing around with my new air fryer, my latest kitchen obsession, this was perfect!

Using an air fryer makes this savory tofu crispy in record time. If you are looking for ways to reduce or eliminate oil from you diet, this recipe is perfect for you. If you can’t buy the Nola Red spice bland, you may swap it with your seasoning of choice. Below are some of the advantages of using an air fryer vs baking:

Reasons for using an air fryer instead of baking oil-free tofu:

  • Air Fryers are faster than traditional ovens with less time for preheat
  • Air Fryers work at lower temps. You can reduce the temperature of a conventional recipe by as much as 60 degrees F when you make it in an air fryer
  • Because hot air circulates through the mesh basket, food doesn’t have to be turned as often and is less likely to stick
  • The Air Fryer crisps the edges of the tofu and makes it firmer and chewier, without having to freeze it or press it with fancy tofu presses.

Instructions
  1. Drain the tofu and cut it into three slices lengthwise. Place tofu on a double layer of paper towels, cover with more towels. Gently press with your hands, to soak enough water out into the paper towels.
  2. Return the tofu to the cutting board and cut each piece into about 10 cubes. Place the tofu in a medium bowl to marinade.
  3. Mix and whisk the remaining ingredients well in a smaller bowl. Pour over the tofu and stir the tofu until all sides are well coated. Let it marinate at least 10 minutes. The longer you marinate it, the more flavorful it will be.
  4. Place the tofu in a single layer in the basket (leaving any marinade behind) Air fry for about 6 minutes at 350F. Use a thin, flexible spatula to loosen the tofu and turn it. Return it to the air fryer and begin checking at 4 minutes to check if it looks golden and slightly darker at the edges but not overcooked or it will be tough.
  5. Serve over bed of rice and your choice of veggies and garnish with chopped green onion.
